Motorised Vehicle for Physically Challenged Persons
GAIL (India) Ltd. has introduced a Motorised Vehicle for Physically Challenged Persons on the occasion of "World Disability Day, 2005". They have also instituted the "Achievements in Adversity" Trophy. GAIL is also promoting the use of plastic for Manufacturing of Artificial Limbs. As a corporate they have pledged to meet 3% statutory requirement of employing physically challenged persons by early 2006.

New Disabled-friendly Vehicle
Maruti Udyog's Solio, a disabled friendly vehicle recently unveiled at the 8th Auto Expo in new Delhi. Also, Flora foundation is planning to introduce 100 disable friendly taxis as part of call a cab initiative. 50 Maruti Versas and 50 Tata Marinas will come customised with ramps for wheelchairs and attendant service. (Indian Express)

Wheelchair that Climbs Steps
A student project of Mr. Vijay Bapat, head of Industrial Design Centre (IDC) of IIT, Mumbai is the 'Ascender' - a hand-powered wheelchair with a rubber traction belt which helps it to climb and descend steps. useful for people with orthopedic handicaps, its estimated cost is Rs.15,000/-. 

Gas Stove with Braille Markings
Department of Science & Technology (DST) has sponsored a project for a brain child of Mr. G.G. Ray of IDC, a gas stove for the visually impaired with Braille markings on the switches. Other features include self-ignition, flame guard to protect the hands and a flame failure detecting sensor as well as a buzzer to raise an alert if there is a spillage. Cost - Rs.3500/- each.
